08:26 pm - New Who November special: Waters of Mars
Hmm, I guess that was OK, but not exceptional. ( But I don't want to spoil you, all the same )
Er, and that's it, really. Nothing much else of substance or depth that I could see. But can't wait for the Christmas / New Year's specials, all the same!

in short, an ex-soldier finds a gun in his garden, hands it in to the police and gets arrested. There is no way in this country for people to be concerned citizens. It happens with other things too. What on earth are we supposed to do?!

just about the only place i haven't mentioned my awesome fingernails is on the internets. if you've seen me in the past couple of months, i apologise for the duplication here.
before the wedding i wanted to get my nails in better shape and started going for regular manicures. my nails are very weak and i tend to chew them. the salon kept trying to convince me to get what they refer to as biogel but initially i figured it was a ploy to make more cash. eventually i gave in and boy am i glad i did. they apply 4 coats of gel substance that dries instantly under a small uv lamp (yes, i wear uv block on my hands). it costs about 50-100% more than a standard manicure, is dry the second you walk out of the door and lasts 2-3 weeks. it's incredible. this week they even did me a custom glitter topcoat. if you're into having your nails done, even if they aren't weak or brittle, i'd really recommend it. having perfectly shiny unchipped nails for weeks on end is really weird. and great.
05:11 pm - Advice needed - Triumph Brakes
I tried, today, to change the brake pads on a 1995 Triumph Trident (rear only, twin pot calipers). Whilst I've done it quite a few times on other bikes, it was the first for this bike.
And I failed!
I just couldn't get the pistons back far enough to even come close to accepting the new pads - they move fairly smoothly & easily whilst well out (for very worn pads) but won't go back in anywhere near far enough for new pads. I've tried cleaning them, moving them out a bit further (one at a time) to check there's no ring of gunk, the usual trick with a mole wrench & a piece of wood to protect the back of the caliper, everything I could think of. But no joy...
Is there a trick I don't know of? Some Triumph oddity? A bleed somewhere? Or is there a common fault on Triumphs that does this - and if so, what do I need to do to fix it?
Thanks in advance!

03:00 pm - Dr Who - a plea
Dear lovely friends-listers!
I am unlikely to see the new Doctor Who special until tomorrow evening, as I do not have a functioning TV and watching it on my tiny netbook screen on iPlayer probably won't be very satisfying.
Please, please, if you post about Doctor Who tonight or tomorrow, put it behind a cut tag to avoid spoilers. I currently know nothing about the episode other than the title, and I'd really like it to stay that way until tomorrow evening.
Thanks!
10:08 am - A Big Thankyou...
To

We finally got around to seeing 9 today.
An utterly brilliant film and probably the best animation I have ever seen, as good as Coraline is, it beats ten bells of crap out of that.

I won't spoil it but I highly recommend you go and see it as soon as you can. It is actually very scary and the whole concept is quite frightening. It is an absolute MUST if you like Steampunk, The Brother Quay and Jan Svankmajer and animation in general. It is much much more than just "Terminator with sock puppets" as some of the press reports have said. It raises questions about Evolution, Creationism, and explores Egyptian ideas of Ba and Ka. It asks what happens when the persuit of technology gets into the wrong hands. And as someone who falls firmly on the side of Science it raises some uncomfortable questions for me and made me jump and squirm in a way that my current obsession with Zombie movies never do.
My favorite character is the character of 6 who I think is meant to be Tim Burton as a sock puppet.
I hope this movies wins an Oscar if they have a best animation catagory, it throughly deserves ones.
Stitchpunk for the win :D

11:50 pm - Help!
The beautiful Yamaha P85 stayed in the car until today because I was so afraid of dropping it. This afternoon Elizabeth came round especially to help lift it into the house (she's the marvellous neighbour who cut the grass at the end of summer).
We assembled the stand, without any useful help from the drawings purporting to be instructions, and discovered that the keyboard slides off it. Perhaps it's the Wrong Sort.
Please does anyone know how to keep a keyboard on its stand?

06:15 pm - [Gigs] Advice to teenage boys ...
When accompanying two young lasses to what by appearances may be their (and your) first 90s reunion tour gig, and returning from the bar between songs each bearing a drink in each hand, and finding yourself somewhere to stand in a surprisingly clear space in the middle and about twelve feet back from the front railing, it behoves you to check to see whether the afore-mentioned mostly empty space is also occupied by a couple of burly crop-headed and tattooed gentlemen, wearing old tour t-shirts, who appear to be catching their breath.
If you fail to carry out this, very simple, check, do not be surprised if, about halfway through the first verse of the next song, you and your companions end up wearing your drinks.
[sigh] No points for observation and anticipation for that lad.
At an earlier point another member of the pit had told me "No bowling!" after I'd launched one of the above-mentioned fellows across the circle. [grin]
Right, it's past time to get my arse out of the door and up to Brixton ...
02:44 pm - [Music] You wanna go out because it's raining and blowing ...
Actually, no.
03:22 pm - Flu/swine flu vaccines
I'm not on the list for free flu jabs (grump: despite fact I teach 1000s of grotty students and get flu every year :( and was thinking of making the effort this year to actually go pay for both seasonal and piggy flu jabs.
Does anyone know where is doing this? My GP surgery was completely unhelpful, as was local Boots.. I have a vague recollection of Asda? But nothing on Google.
EDIT : isn't it a bit fucking stupid that they spend x million on people telling everyone to get swine flu jabs, then do the usual restrictions on who gets it (fair enough, NHS can't waste money etc) and NOT spend any money at all even telling their GPs surgeries where people could go and soend their OWN MONEY on them??? Ah the market economy!
